AIS mismatch: check the evidence before filing.

A difference between AIS and your documents is a question to resolve. Start by identifying exactly which transaction and amount differ. Changing the return just to match a headline total can hide the reason for the discrepancy.

AIS, TIS and your source documents do different jobs

AIS shows information held by the department; TIS summarises categories with processed and accepted or source-confirmed values. The department also says AIS may omit transactions, so income missing from AIS still needs investigation and accurate reporting. See the official AIS FAQ, questions 3 and 5.

Keep both reported and modified values, rather than replacing the original statement with your preferred number. Your source document explains the underlying transaction; AIS provides a separate comparison. Neither a match nor an empty category settles every fact needed for a return.

Use records for the same person and income period. Keep the original year label, including whether it says Assessment Year, Financial Year or Tax Year. A historical purchase may support a current sale’s cost; it does not turn an earlier-year sale into current-year activity.

Make a transaction-level comparison

  1. Save a dated copy: keep the portal export and original supporting records. Record when you downloaded them so later source changes remain visible.
  2. Locate the entry: note its information category, reporting source, transaction date and amount description. Compare those with the relevant document row, not just the annual total.
  3. Write the explanation: identify a missing record, different measurement, possible duplicate, timing difference or incorrect source report. Leave an unresolved difference open when the evidence cannot settle it.
  4. Keep income and credit separate: a salary or interest figure and the tax deducted from it are different facts. Do not add the same income again merely because it appears in two documents.
Practical checks for common differences
DifferenceGatherCheck
Salary differsAll employers’ salary and TDS certificates; the salary amount described in each recordCheck whether you are comparing gross salary, income after exemptions or taxable salary. Preserve each employer’s record.
Interest or dividends differAnnual certificates, dividend records and transaction-level statementsMatch the payer, account, date and amount. An account balance is not an interest figure; a repeated entry needs evidence before being treated as a duplicate.
Broker amount differsTrade statement, tax P&L and acquisition recordsIdentify whether AIS describes sale proceeds and the computation describes capital gain. Those measure different things; a sale value alone does not establish the gain.
TDS differsThe tax-credit statement, deductor certificate and linked income sourceKeep the credit separate from the income. Check the deductor and year; ask the deductor to investigate missing or incorrect reporting.

For example, an AIS sale entry and a broker’s capital-gain total can legitimately differ because one describes proceeds and the other incorporates acquisition basis. Reconcile the sale records and cost evidence before labelling either figure wrong. This example does not determine the applicable tax treatment.

Submit supported feedback and retain the acknowledgement

The AIS FAQ, questions 10 and 11, describes selecting the relevant entry, supplying feedback and obtaining its acknowledgement. It also explains that feedback and a modified value appear alongside the reported information.

Use the option that fits the evidence. Save the acknowledgement, your explanation and any correspondence with the reporting employer, bank or broker. An acknowledgement records feedback submission; it does not prove that a source has corrected its records or that the tax treatment in your ITR is right.

If the source sends a replacement certificate or statement, preserve both versions and check which transactions changed. Resolve the affected computation from the new evidence. Avoid editing the original file to erase the difference.

Check the whole return before filing

Inspect income, deductions, tax credits, required facts and source-period exclusions together. An AIS match is useful evidence; it is not a guarantee against questions from the department. If a difference needs judgement, take the records and your reconciliation to a qualified tax professional.

Renuds highlights differences in supported records and keeps required questions visible. Uploading a corrected document is preparation; it does not send AIS feedback or amend a filed return. Check the current calculation’s review status before describing it as reviewed.

How this guide is prepared

Prepared by Renuds. Department guidance and the product statements on this page were checked on . The practical checklists are our preparation method; linked department pages establish the portal procedures. Examples are illustrative, not taxpayer records.

AI assisted the research and drafting, followed by independent checks of the linked official sources by a separate AI agent. These checks are not human expert review.

This is general preparation guidance, not a professional assessment of your tax position. This page does not carry a named CA review. A return’s own review status applies to that calculation, not to this article.
